Chapter Five discussion

How do Parker and her grandmother seem to experience their aimless driving on the BQE differently? Why do you think so? Do you see any significance to this tradition beyond aimless driving?

  1. Great chapter, Abby! I can’t even imagine creating a tradition of voluntarily driving on the BQE on Thanksgiving (let alone any other day….)

Her grandmother seems to use the drive to sight see as she peers (or, rather, stares) into other cars shamelessly. Parker seems to use the drive almost as a point of maturity. I can imagine Parker as a kid doing what her grandmother did in this chapter — peering into other cars, perhaps a way to see what other people look like on Thanksgiving, which is such a family-focued day. But now the roles are reversed in a way. Very interesting, and I look forward to Chapter 6!

    • Very interesting point, J! I love the observation that their roles seem to have reversed over the years. Her grandmother’s child-like experience during the drives does seem to mirror that of a young child, someone who is seeing the world anew, invigorated by all the possible surprises in car windows. Sort of similar to a moment in Chapter Four, when Parker recollected her own observations on the stoops of Brooklyn when she was young. Great points!

I believe Grandma taking Parker on the BQE drive(more dangerous than most places in the world) was one way she could ‘tour the world’ with her and see ‘foreign places'( like Tennessee and PA license plates) and make her postcards even more special. It was a very interesting shared experience on that one particular day and tho a bit unusual it certainly has very interesting possibilities.

    • I like the idea that the BQE is a kind of microcosm for “seeing the world”. Very nice thought!
